BASB August 29th - Getting Things Done

Getting Things Done Workshop

Before officially starting BASB, Tiago hosted a Get Things Done (GTD) workshop. He has a history with the concept. As GTD was the book that kick-started his journey into productivity and teaching others to do the same with his course Get Stuff Done Like a Boss.

What is GTD?

GTD put simply is a personal productive methodology to well, Get Things Done. Much have been said about the topic so I won't go into much detail. But there are 2 main principles from the method:

Have a personalised workflow:

A consistent practice that allows you to focus on what matters without letting anything fall through the cracks. Workflow is set up to make certain behaviours intuitive.

To reduce the cognitive load and leave space in your brain to do what it does best.

  • Capture every single thing you have to do in one place (Brain dump).

  • Clarify the outcome you want for each of them and the next action required.

  • Organise these tasks in a system you trust.

  • Reflect on which tasks are appropriate for the current week.

  • Engage with and complete those tasks only.

From the 5 steps of GTD, I find that clarify has been a step I have often missed in my methodology.

I would often vaguely list things I wanted to get done. Giving no indication of its importance or how to do it. For example, I could list: "Contact Ben" on my to-do list. But leave no indication as to how or why to do it.

Instead, I can write: "Email Ben or Send a Whatsapp message or Call Ben at 3 pm." These allow me to picture the next action in my mind. The key thought is to design the task to make myself take action.

This workshop created a good framework going into BASB. It helps to visualise how I can put the knowledge learnt into action.
